The 3 Best Free Things To Do in Amsterdam On New Years Eve

1 Watch the fire work at Nieuwmarkt
This is definitely the best place to watch the Dutch fireworks in Amsterdam. You have to be there just before 12 pm and you just have to say: WOW!

2 Party at Museumplein
The free party at Museumplein is also a good place to celebrate New Years Eve. This is the program:
21:00: Event begins
23:00: Show; start TV broadcast
23:59: Countdown
00:00: Spectacular fireworks show

00:08: End of TV broadcast; after-party with DJs
01:00: Event ends

3 Walk or cycle through Vondelpark
This is number 3 on the list, but maybe it's the best tip! Nobody goes to the Vondelpark! Two years ago we cycled through the park just before noon, and YES, when the fireworks started, we were the only ones there. Try it, this is really marvelous!

Free Parking Amsterdam

You don't have to pay for parking your car in Amsterdam this week. Most pay machines are covered up, because of possible damage from fire work. Officially you do have to pay, but they skipped the control this week. Beware: the only places you don't have to pay, are the places where the machines are covered up.

Talents of the Royal College of Art in Kahlmann Gallery

The new exhibition Talents of the Royal College of Art in Kahmann Gallery Amsterdam showcases works by five recent graduates of the prestigious London College photography master program (see some of their photo's bellow).

The work of the photograhers is very different, but what they have in common is their intensity. For example look at the background of the portraits of Sarah Mei Herman (http://sipf.sg/web/sipf-2008/exhibitions-artists/sarah-mei-herman/), they're so emotionally and strong that she beats simular ones from Annie Leibowitz in A Photographers Life!

In the main hall there are a lot of seats, so normally there's enough space for everyone. For the concerts in the small hall you have to come half an hour before starting time to quarentee your seat.

3 Ways to Stay Warm in Amsterdam for Free

Because of the snow you only need money for a hot chocolate or coffee these days in Amsterdam to enjoy yourself. If you don't have any money we have three good tips to stay warm in the center of Amsterdam:

1 Take a coffee at Albert Heijn at Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 226 (the building is amazing too).

2 Read a dozen magazines at Athaneum Nieuwscentrum, Spui 14-16.
A magazine heaven in Amsterdam, they have the best national and international magazines.
This snowy photo of the newscenter was published in the Guardian:

3  Visit the American Book Center opposite of the newscenter (Spui 12) and start reading.

Vintage at Amsterdam's Noordermarkt

On Monday there's this great flea market at the Noordermarkt. It starts at 9 am, and the early birds will find the best vintage stuff. From old photo collections to designer shoes. Don't forget to go to the stand of King Louis, a Dutch label selling their prototypes and out of stock clothes. It's one of our favorites.

Chinatown in Amsterdam

Until the end of the month you can see the free photo exhibition 'China town 100 years' in the NH Barbizon Palace in Amsterdam (Prins Hendrikkade 59-72). Open: Tuesday-Sunday 12-17pm.

Afterwards visit the He Hua Temple at the Zeedijk (free as well) and eat something at New King (much better than Nam Kee!), good meals below 10 euros.

These photo's from Ab Koers were published in
fashion magazine Avenue in the seventies.

The 5 Best Free WiFi internet Cafes in Amsterdam

This is our top-5.

1) Public Library (OBA), Oosterdokskade
Great place to sit and work, with good lunch opportunities at the 8th floor and a marvelous free Amsterdam view.

2 The Waag Society, Nieuwmarkt 4
Waag Society develops creative technology for social innovation. That's why there's free wifi in the building, but also at a great part of the Nieuwmarkt square. Take your pick in the summer.

3 De Ysbreeker, Weesperzijde 23
This former old cafe (started 1702) has made modern, open and spacy this year. Great place to have a coffee and free wifi, and certainly in summer to sit on the big terrace at the Amstel.

4 The cafe of Studio/K, Timorplein 62
Work here, surrounded by a lot of students of the university. Grab a movie in between.

5 De Balie, Kleine-Gartmanplantsoen 10
A cultural center, lovely place to work and good lunches (try their soups). Starters in Amsterdam use this place as an office to negotiate with clients.

On this site you can find more free wifi internet cafes in Amsterdam. http://www.wifi-amsterdam.nl/free_wifi_internet.html

Free walking guide through Amsterdam

Here you can find a free mini guide and map of The Old Amsterdam Route. Walk along the old port district, along one of the oldest houses of the city, visit medieval public houses, century-old churches or even the largest temple of Europe. Or visit cosy lunchrooms, cafés and tasting rooms and discover special museums. The walking route also leads you through a very special shopping area. Here you can find shops with: collector's items, curiosities, fashion, design and nostalgic, hand-made products.

On your way visit the exhibition A'DAM man and fashion Amsterdams Historisch museum (http://ahm.nl/nl/Amsterdams-Historisch-Museum/ontdek/tentoonstellingen/a-dam-man-mode) and look at the wedding suite of Job Cohen.
